Mermelada DemosThese are demos I'm doing as I work out arrangements for my next album, Mermelada. Cold Light Of Day (2006.05.25) recorded in Cubase 5.1 Something New (2006.07.04) recorded in Cubase 5.1. The first new song I have written in a long while Cold Light Of Day (2006.12.23) My first song recorded in Pro Tools 7.1. Popster124 (2007.05.30) This isn't a song, just an arrangement exercise I was working on. I was trying to get the drum machine to sound "real" in the way I programmed the patterns and mixed the output. Also working with new virtual organ software, getting the hang of the Leslie. 75 (2007.06.02) the "Josh Groban" mix. My typical 70's - 80's production style, with over-the top arrangements and too much reverb. This was my first instinct for how the song should sound. 75 (2007.06.09) the "Wurly" mix. The same performance, remixed and re-effected a week later. I was going for a more modern sound and more variety in the arrangement. Toned the strings down, used the Wurlitzer piano sound, dropped out the instruments in one of the verses, and added the delay for a flashback/daydream effect. 75 (2007.09.15) the "Vangelis" mix. For this version, I threw out everything but the midi notes from the main instrument part, which I reworked to reduce the polyphony and make all notes the same velocity. New vocal track and new accompanyment. Some ideas I was chasing here -- Less reverb, bringing the lead vocal down into the mix and using a low-pass filter sweep for the dropout verse, hopefully for a more modern sound. Also, since this was a very emotional and "human" song, I decided to try an "inhuman" sound, with everything obviously synth and a little bit of flanger on the voice. LoFi + High Polish. |
